چکیده

Elastic stability criteria, derived for a homogenous lattice under arbitrary external load, provide an upper bound on the critical stress or strain which a crystalline solid can withstand. Since the onset of a structural instability is load dependent, the corresponding theoretical strength can be given similar interpretation. When combined with molecular dynamics simulation, such results allow a systematic discussion of competing structural transitions, as illustrated here in a case study of pressure-induced polymorphic and crystal-to-amorphous transitions and in some remarks on the thermoelastic mechanism for homogeneous (mechanical) melting, a process which defines an upper limit of metastability. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Non-Schmid effects and finite wavelength instabilities in single crystal metals

A long standing postulate in crystal plasticity of metals, known as Schmid law, states that yielding commences once the resolved shear stress on a slip plane reaches a critical value. While non-Schmid effects have previously been reported experimentally (mostly in alloys) and in molecular-dynamics simulations, we examine the validity of this assumption through phonon stability analysis. We subj...

Influence of weak anchoring on flow instabilities in nematic liquid crystals

We analyse the homogeneous instabilities in a nematic liquid crystal subjected to plane steady Couette or Poiseuille flow in the case when the director is prealigned perpendicular to the flow plane taking into account weak anchoring at the confining surfaces. The critical shear rate decreases for decreasing anchoring strength and goes to zero in the limit of torque-free boundary conditions. For...

Third Order Formulation for Vibrating Non-Homogeneous Cylindrical Shells in Elastic Medium

Third order shear deformation theory of cylindrical shells is employed to investigate the vibration characteristics of non-homogeneous cylindrical shells surrounded by an elastic medium. The kinematic relations are obtained using the strain-displacement relations of Donnell shell theory. The shell properties are considered to be dependent on both position and thermal environment. A suitable fun...

Damped Vibrations of Parabolic Tapered Non-homogeneous Infinite Rectangular Plate Resting on Elastic Foundation (RESEARCH NOTE)

In the present paper damped vibrations of non-homogeneous infinite rectangular plate of parabolically varying thickness resting on elastic foundation has been studied. Following Lévy approach, the equation of motion of plate of varying thickness in one direction is solved by quintic spline method. The effect of damping, elastic foundation and taperness is discussed with permissible range of pa...

Melting mechanisms at the limit of superheating.

The atomic-scale details during melting of a surface-free Lennard-Jones crystal were monitored using molecular dynamics simulations. Melting occurs when the superheated crystal spontaneously generates a sufficiently large number of spatially correlated destabilized particles that simultaneously satisfy the Lindemann and Born instability criteria. The accumulation and coalescence of these intern...
